The Shibari Pride Flag
The Shibari Pride flag, or Rope Bondage pride flag, was created in 2026 by Merinth0 after he encountered some of the wonderful fetish and kink pride flags at a local event. After searching the web to see if shibari or rope bondage had a pride flag Merinth0 came up short and decided to create one, to celebrate the artform of rope bondage and to represent the community in the vast world of pride flags.
Taking inspiration from colours appearing in traditional Japanese culture and symbolism for bringing people together, the shibari pride flag represents the creative process, the fiery passion, the artistic and erotic expression and the calm serenity that rope bondage can bring.
Kuro Iro and Stylised Nawa - The Black and Rope Icon
The black in the flag is Kuro Iro and represents the fertile void (kyo), the place of potential before creation. In the heart of black the white symbol brings balance and fills the void with potential. The symbol depicts the Honmusubi (square knot), a fundamental knot in shibari that joins two ropes together.

Beni Iro - The Red
The red in the flag is Beni Iro, a deep red colour that comes from the safflower, a pigment that is used in the lipstick of a Geisha. It represents fiery passion, life and the hue of the setting sun.

Yamabuki Iro - The Yellow
The yellow in the flag is yamabuki iro, a bright yellow colour derived from the Japanese Kerria flower. It represents flamboyance and luxury and was often used on the inside of a kimono to catch the eyes if it was peeking out.

Ai Iro - The Blue
The blue in the flag is Ai iro, a rich dark blue colour that derived from the tade ai plant. This dye became the rich blue colour during the Edo period and is widely known as Japan Blue or Indigo. It was widely used in Kimono and in ukiyo-e art. It represents calm and serenity.
